Department of Natural Resources: Seeking Public Comments for Environmental Scan of Firing Range Grant Funded Project

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) seeks public comment on a draft environmental assessment (EA) for the proposed grant award to the Brill Area Sportsmen`s Club for a shooting range project of 100/200 yards at Rice Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin.

The project will clear approximately one acre of wooded area, construct a berm in the newly cleared space, and raise the height of an existing berm by four feet. These berm adjustments will increase safety between the two firing lanes on either side.

The DNR is dedicated to promoting the safety of hunters, hunting and shooting sports. To achieve this goal, MNR has developed the Range Grant Program to assist in the development of new ranges and the improvement of existing ranges that make their facilities available to the public. DNR’s vision for ranges in Wisconsin is to increase filming opportunities in a safe environment. This will maintain Wisconsin’s hunting heritage and the economic impact of these activities.

Pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (42 USC §§ 4321-4347, as amended), the DNR has developed an environmental assessment for the Brill Area Sportsmen’s Club: New Berm Construction and ADA Track Project. The subject grant funds are from the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Program of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The draft environmental assessment is available here. The public is encouraged to submit comments on the draft environmental assessment. Submit your comments by September 25 to:
